Welcome and Introductions

Membership Drive Goals & Objectives: Our current goals include boosting membership to 10 active members and to reinforce WAEYCs focus on legislative action.

We reviewed Membership Benefits

CAEYC web site and listserve: We discussed the features available on the caeyc.info web site and mentioned the recent addition of our listserve mailing list. Some ideas to improve the quality of the content and usability were offered.

Disaster Survival: Teresa A. brought in a Disaster Kit from her center and demonstrated many of the items within. A specific list of items will be posted soon on the caeyc.info web site. In addition several special PUD phone numbers were given including special needs clients, and the outage status hot line. In addition it was mentioned that Ann Marzano with the Grays Harbor County Health Dept. does give excellent disaster preparedness trainings.

Kindergarten Readiness: We had an interesting and diverse discussion concerning Kindergarten Readiness. We discussed how expectations and practices in preschool have changed over the last few years and how they continue to be shifted between parents, public school staff and ECE professionals. As we had all three of these groups represented, it was obviously an point on which more discussion could be fruitful. In addition, we talked about how developmentally appropriate practices may overlap or come into conflict with some Kindergarten Readiness concepts. We briefly discussed testing procedures and other metrics.

At this point, our meeting time was expired so we did not get a chance to bring up:

Board Member Scholarships

Participation in the Coastal Association for the Education of Young Children's (CAEYC) Volunteer Board may be just for you.

CAEYC is currently recruiting candidates for the position of President, Vice-President, and Treasurer. Individual job descriptions and desirable qualities can be found here: CAEYC BOARD.

After successful completion of the first year in a two year term, CAEYC Board members are awarded with a free membership for their second year. THAT'S RIGHT! Show us how much you care by joining our board, and we will gladly support you in your professional development through one free year as a NAEYC member.

To claim the scholarship, applicants must be fully current in their NAEYC membership and have successfully served for one year of a two year term in office. The scholarship funds (full for students and general memberships, $50 toward a comprehensive membership) will be sent directly to NAEYC to retain your enrollment as a member.

New Member Scholarships

Coastal AEYC is happy to announce that we are offering a limited number of 1/2 price memberships on a first come, first serve basis to new members attending meetings on August 21 (9:30-11:00 am) or September 19th (6:00-8:00 pm).

To receive a half price membership, we ask recipients to make a commitment to serve on a CAEYC committee, which could be as fun as planning our annual Kids' Town Carnival for the April 2008 Week of the Young Child, as easy as calling friends and members to remind them of upcoming meetings, or as informative as representing CAEYC at local networking meetings like the Interagency Coordinating Council.

Unless otherwise posted, meetings are held at the Emerson Manor in Hoquiam: 703 Simpson Ave.

I. Announcements
The Mission Statement was reviewed.
It was announced that the treasurer had resigned effective 04/18/2007
It was announced that we had received the results of the WAEYC survey

II. Discussion
The WAEYC survey results were discussed in detail. There seems to be a disparity between the findings of the survey and the meeting attendance record. What can be done to boost involvement? What kind of events do people want to attend?

CAEYC requires at least 4-6 active members to fill the board positions. These members should be able and willing to commit a minimum of 5% of their time to CAEYC activities.

CAEYC elections are coming up in July

The dissolution of CAEYC into another AEYC affiliate was discussed. Advantages include fewer administrative tasks. Disadvantages include possible loss of local focus. Jeanne Ward will contact AEYC to investigate further which chapters would benefit most from our possible membership.

Does CAEYC wish to have a boot at the Kid’s Carnival event at the South Shore Mall? Linda Sysco is willing provided that there are 2 shifts of 2 members each. Jeanne Ward will investigate further the interest of the members.

DURING THE 2005-2006 PROGRAM YEAR, CAEYC AWARDED 7 FREE MEMBERSHIP SCHOLARSHIPS TO APPLICANTS WHO WERE EITHER A MEMBER OF THE HISPANIC/LATINO POPULATION OR WERE AGE 30 OR YOUNGER!

A Free, One-Year Membership To NAEYC, Washington AEYC and Your Local Affiliate Chapter!

The Washington Association for the Education of Young Children (WAEYC) and the local Affiliate Chapters of Washington State are professional membership organizations working on behalf of those in the early childhood profession, children, and families in your community. We currently have funding to award membership scholarships to early childhood professionals/students within two under-represented populations in the organization:

1) Members of the Hispanic/Latino population and
2) Individuals who are age 30 or younger.

If you are from one or both of these populations, we hope you apply for a membership scholarship.

Award Process and Information:

Submit attached application to: _Coastal_AEYC by _November 30_, 2005. Applications will be reviewed and scholarships awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. Funds are limited. __Coastal____ AEYC will notify you of the status of the membership award. Membership year is 12 months beginning from the time the membership is processed.

Applicants Must:

a) Be a professional currently working in the field or a student in Early Childhood Education.
b) Not previously been a member of AEYC.
c) Indicate commitment to the AEYC Affiliate Chapter, to be fulfilled within the year of membership.
d) Be a member of the Hispanic/Latino population AND/OR be age 30 or younger.

The purposes of Washington AEYC shall be charitable and educational. WAEYC shall promote interest, study and action concerning the well-being and education of all young children, (primarily birth through eight years) and their families and foster the growth and development of the membership in their work with, and behalf of, young children.
